Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008

Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008
Publisher: Apress | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 1430216441 | 744 pages | PDF | 10 Mb

LINQ is the project name for a set of extensions to the .NET Framework that provide a generic approach to querying data from different data sources. LINQ will premier in Visual Studio 2008, and will become the next must–have skill for .NET developers. For more information about LINQ, you can check out http://www.linqdev.com.

Starting with code and ending with code and tailored for the VB language, Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 is a veritable treasury of LINQ examples that will save you hours, even days, of research time. Keeping you focused on the relevant LINQ principles, expert author Joseph Rattz, Jr., and VB specialist Dennis Hayes provide examples for complex models that you won’t find anywhere else.

In most books, you’ll find plenty of simple examples to demonstrate how to use a method, but authors rarely show how to use the more complex prototypes. Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 is different. Demonstrating the overwhelming majority of LINQ operators and protoypes, Joseph Rattz, Jr., and Dennis Hayes condense their extensive experience and expertise into a desk companion that is essential for any serious .NET professional.

Rather than obscure the relevant LINQ principles in code examples by focusing on a demonstration application you have no interest in writing, this book cuts right to the chase of each LINQ operator, method, or class. However, where complexity is necessary to truly demonstrate an issue, the examples are right there in the thick of it. For example, code samples demonstrating how to handle concurrency conflicts actually create concurrency conflicts so you can step through the code and see them unfold.

Most books tell you about the simple stuff, while few books warn you of the pitfalls. Where Pro LINQ: Language Integrated Query in VB 2008 returns your investment is in the hours, and sometimes days, spent by the authors determining why something may not work as expected. Sometimes this results in an innocent–looking paragraph that may take you a minute to read and understand, but took days to research and explain.

Face it, most technical books while informative, are dull. LINQ need not be dull. Written with a sense of humor, this book will attempt to entertain you on your journey through the wonderland of LINQ and VB 2008.
What you’ll learn

* How to leverage all the new LINQ–relevant VB 2008 language features including extension methods, lambda expressions, anonymous data types, and partial methods
* How to use LINQ to Objects to query in–memory data collections such as arrays, ArrayLists, and Lists to retrieve the data you want
* Why some queries are deferred, how a deferred query can bite you, and how you can make deferred queries work for you
* How to use LINQ to XML to revolutionize your creation, manipulation, and searching of XML data
* How to query DataSets with LINQ to DataSet so you can coexist with legacy code and use LINQ to query databases other than SQL Server
* How to query databases with LINQ to SQL, write your own entity classes, and understand how to handle concurrency conflicts

Better, Faster, Lighter Java

Better, Faster, Lighter Java
Publisher: O’Reilly Media, Inc. | Edition: 2004 | ISBN: 0596006764 | 262 pages | CHM | 6.56 Mb

Sometimes the simplest answer is the best. Many Enterprise Java developers, accustomed to dealing with Java’s spiraling complexity, have fallen into the habit of choosing overly complicated solutions to problems when simpler options are available. Building server applications with “heavyweight” Java-based architectures, such as WebLogic, JBoss, and WebSphere, can be costly and cumbersome. When you’ve reached the point where you spend more time writing code to support your chosen framework than to solve your actual problems, it’s time to think in terms of simplicity.

In Better, Faster, Lighter Java authors Bruce Tate and Justin Gehtland argue that the old heavyweight architectures are unwieldy, complicated, and contribute to slow and buggy application code. As an alternative means for building better applications, the authors present two “lightweight” open source architectures: Hibernate–a persistence framework that does its job with a minimal API and gets out of the way, and Spring–a container that’s not invasive, heavy or complicated.

Hibernate and Spring are designed to be fairly simple to learn and use, and place reasonable demands on system resources. Better, Faster, Lighter Java shows you how they can help you create enterprise applications that are easier to maintain, write, and debug, and are ultimately much faster.

Written for intermediate to advanced Java developers, Better, Faster, Lighter Java, offers fresh ideas–often unorthodox–to help you rethink the way you work, and techniques and principles you’ll use to build simpler applications. You’ll learn to spend more time on what’s important. When you’re finished with this book, you’ll find that your Java is better, faster, and lighter than ever before.

With its rep for being the sort of machine that won’t intimidate even the most inexperienced users, what’s the appeal of the Mac(R) for hard-core geeks? The Mac has always been an efficient tool, pleasant to use and customize, and eminently hackable. But now with Mac OS(R) X’s BSD core, many a Unix(R) developer has found it irresistible. The latest version of Mac OS X, called Panther, makes it even easier for users to delve into the underlying Unix operating system. In fact, you can port Linux(R) and Unix applications and run them side-by-side with your native Aqua(R) apps right on the Mac desktop. Still, even experienced Unix users may find themselves in surprisingly unfamiliar territory as they set out to explore Mac OS X. Even if you know Macs through and through, Mac OS X Panther is unlike earlier Macs, and it’s radically different from the Unix you’ve used before. Enter Mac OS X Panther for Unix Geeks by Brian Jepson and Ernest E. Rothman, two Unix geeks who found themselves in the same place you are. The new edition of this book is your guide to figuring out the BSD Unix system and Panther-specific components that you may find challenging. This concise book will ease you into the Unix innards of Mac OS X Panther, covering such topics as: A quick overview of the Terminal application, including Terminal alternatives like iTerm and GLterm Understanding Open Directory (LDAP) and NetInfo Issues related to using the GNU C Compiler (GCC) Library linking and porting Unix software An overview of Mac OS X Panther’s filesystem and startup processes Creating and installing packages using Fink and Darwin Ports Building the Darwin kernel Using the Apple(R) X11 distribution for running X Windows(R) applications on top of Mac OS X The book wraps up with a quick manpage-style reference to the “Missing Manual Pages” –commands that come with Mac OS X Panther, although there are no manpages. If you find yourself disoriented by the new Mac environment, Mac OS X Panther for Unix Geeks will get you acclimated quickly to the foreign new areas of a familiar Unix landscape.

Publisher: Wiley | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 0470410973 | 272 pages | PDF | 7.65 Mb

An updated and expanded Second Edition of the popular guide to social media for the business community

Marketers must look to the Web for new ways of finding customers and communicating with them, rather than at them. From Facebook and YouTube to blogs and Twitter-ing, social media on the Internet is the most promising new way to reach customers. Marketing to the Social Web, Second Edition helps marketers and their companies understand how to engage customers, build customer communities, and maximize profits in a time of marketing confusion. Author and social media guru Larry Weber describes newly available tools and platforms, and shows you how to apply them to see immediate results and growth.

Rather than broadcast messages to audiences, savvy marketers should encourage participation in social networks to which people want to belong, where dialogue with customers, and between customers, can flourish. in Networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and even Flickr are the perfect forums for this dialog; this book shows you how to tap into this new media.

In addition to the tools and tactics that made Marketing to the Social Web a critical hit among marketers, this second edition includes three entirely new chapters that cover recent changes in the field. These new chapters describe how Facebook will monetize its business and one day surpass Google; how companies can measure the influence and effectiveness of their social media campaigns; and how marketing to mobile social media will grow into an effective practice in the near future.

Marketing must reach out into new forms, media, and models. Marketing to the Social Web, Second Edition presents an exceptional opportunity to use these new tools and models to reach new markets, even in today’s fragmented media environment.

Larry Weber has spent the last three decades building global communications companies, including Weber Shandwick Worldwide and the W2 Group. He is also the founder and Chairman of the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange, the nation’s largest interactive advocate association.

Speaking in Styles: Fundamentals of CSS for Web Designers

Speaking in Styles: Fundamentals of CSS for Web Designers
Publisher: New Riders Press | Edition: July 10, 2009 | ISBN: 0321574168 | 360 pages | PDF | 13.6 Mb

Speaking in Styles targets Web designers, aiming to help them learn the “language” that will be used to take their vision from the static comp to the live Internet. Many designers think that CSS is code, and that it’s too hard to learn. Jason takes an approach to CSS that breaks it down around common design tasks and helps the reader learn that they already think in styles–they just need to learn to speak the language.

Jason helps Web designers find their voice, walks them through the grammar of CSS, shows them how to write their design specs in CSS, and how to prepare it for screen, printer or handheld devices. Along the way designers will learn to optimize their code, make it accessible, optimize for search engines, mix it up with Flash, and more.

Dissecting SQL Server Execution Plans (Kindle Edition)

Dissecting SQL Server Execution Plans
Simple Talk Publishing (April 28, 2008) | ISBN: N\a | 252 pages | PDF | 6.42 MB

Execution plans show you what’s going on behind the scenes in SQL Server. They can provide you with a wealth of information on how your queries are being executed by SQL Server, including which indexes are getting used and where no indexes are being used at all; how the data is being retrieved, and joined, from the tables defined in your query; how aggregations in GROUP BY queries are put together and the anticipated load, and the estimated cost, that all these operations place upon the system. All this information makes the execution plan a vitally important tool in the tool belt of database administrator, database developers, report writers, developers, and pretty much anyone who writes TSQL to access data in a SQL Server database. The goal with this book was to gather as much useful information on execution plans as possible into a single location, and to organize it in such as way that it provided a clear route through the subject, right from the basics of capturing plans, through their interpretation, and then onto how to use them to understand how you might optimize your SQL queries, improve your indexing strategy, spot some common performance issues, and more.

Learning Ext JS

Learning Ext JS
Packt Publishing (November 28, 2008) | ISBN: 1847195148 | 299 pages | PDF | 5.09 MB

Product Description
In DetailAs more and more of our work is done through a web browser, and more businesses build web rather than desktop applications, users want web applications that look and feel like desktop applications. Ext JS is a JavaScript library that makes it (relatively) easy to create desktop-style user interfaces in a web application, including multiple windows, toolbars, drop-down menus, dialog boxes, and much more. Both Commercial and Open Source licenses are available for Ext JS.

Ext JS has the unique advantage of being the only client-side UI library that also works as an application development library. Learning Ext JS will help you create rich, dynamic, and AJAX-enabled web applications that look good and perform beyond the expectations of your users.

From the building blocks of the application layout, to complex dynamic Grids and Forms, this book will guide you through the basics of using Ext JS, giving you the knowledge required to create rich user experiences beyond typical web interfaces. It will also provide you with the tools you need to use AJAX, by consuming server-side data directly into the many interfaces of the Ext JS component library.

What you will learn from this book?

* Create responsive forms
* Look at Web Applications from an entirely new perspective
* Learn to use the major UI components available in Ext JS
* Understand how external data can be consumed by Ext JS
* Query and process remote data into your application
* Use Layouts to bring all of the Ext JS pieces together
* Use Ext JS effects to manipulate the DOM in exciting ways
* Provide a consistent look and feel to your application using Components
* Change the visual style of Ext JS using theming support

Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites: How to setup, configure and customise this powerful PHP/MySQL based Open Source CMS

Drupal: Creating Blogs, Forums, Portals, and Community Websites
Packt Publishing (May 11, 2006) | ISBN: 1904811809 | 284 pages | PDF | 5.45 MB

Product Description

How to setup, configure and customise this powerful PHP/MySQL based Open Source CMS

* Install, configure, administer, maintain and extend Drupal.
* Control access with users, roles and permissions
* Structure your content using Drupal’s powerful CMS features
* Includes coverage of release 4.7

In Detail

Drupal is one of the most popular content management systems on the internet. Based on PHP/MySQL, its power and flexibility combined with its exceptional design mean it is already on the way to becoming the de facto standard for CMS Websites. Drupal’s modular design and structured source code make it both highly flexible and easily extended and modified. Drupal is extremely scalable, making it ideal for both a simple personal website as well as an industrial strength commercial or institutional web presence.

Drupal is a model open source project in that it has a large, friendly community of people who contribute to the project in various ways. Drupal is not only free and easy to use, but this community provides on going mutual support.

Drupal’s power means choosing an initial pathway can be daunting. The flexibility and power of its content management features mean the right approach needs to be taken. This book takes you from initial set up through site design and creation in a series of carefully structured steps. While there are a few advanced topics that are beyond the scope of the book, all of the core stages of creating a website using Drupal are covered in detail.

What you will learn from this book?

Chapter 1 introduces you to the world of Drupal and looks at where Drupal comes from, where its going and what it can offer you. Because it is important to understand the nature of the tasks which lie ahead, it also discusses how to plan and build your website, taking a sneak preview of the book’s demo Website in the process. Finally, we scrutinize the Drupal community and learn how to make the most of Drupal as an organized, living entity and not just a piece of software.

Chapter 2 deals with how to get everything you need up and running on a development machine and also briefly looks at how all the requisite technologies gel together to produce your working Drupal site. Once everything is up and running, and after looking over some of the more common installation problems, the chapter presents a short tour of Drupal in order to give you an idea of what to expect.

Chapter 3 looks at the most general settings which all Drupal administrators need to contend with. Everything from determining your site’s name to dealing with the cache or file system settings gets treated here before we look at more focused and complex issues in the chapters to come.

Chapter 4 sees us adding functionality to the newly created site. The focus of this chapter is really on modules and how they can be added and enabled, or even how to obtain modules that are not part of the standard distribution. Since blocks are often required to display the functionality provided by modules, this chapter ends off with a discussion on how to control blocks.

Chapter 5 concerns itself with the topic of access control. Drupal has a sophisticated role based access control system, which is fundamentally important for controlling how users access your site. This chapter will give you the information you need to implement whatever access controls you require.

Chapter 6 gets to the heart of the matter by beginning the book’s coverage on content. Working with content, what content types are available, administering content and even a discourse on some of the more common content related modules serve as a basis for moving to more advanced content related matters that follow in the next chapter.

Chapter 7 gives you the edge when it comes to creating engaging and dynamic content. While this chapter doesn’t require you to be an expert in HTML, PHP and CSS it does introduce you to the basics and shows how, with a little knowledge, extremely powerful and professional content can be created. That’s only half the story, because later on it looks at categorization and how this particular feature of Drupal sets it apart from everything else out there.

Chapter 8 gives you a run down of how attractive interfaces are created in Drupal through the use of themes. As well as discussing briefly some of the considerations that must be taken into account when planning your website, it ends off by looking at how to make important modifications to your chosen theme.

Chapter 9 really adds the icing on the cake by looking at a host of more advanced topics. From creating flexible content types and generating revenue from ads, all the way through to building dynamic content using Ajax, you will find something to enhance your website and add that something special.

Chapter 10 takes a pragmatic look at the type of tasks you will need to be proficient in in order to successfully run and maintain a Drupal site. Whether its setting up cron jobs or making backups of your database, everything you need to do throughout the course of running your newly created website will be covered here.

Appendix A deals with the all important topic of deployment. Because all major work should be done on a copy of your Website on a development machine, this appendix presents a sound process for taking the finished product and making it available for public consumption on your host site.

Who this book is written for?

This book will suit anyone who has a need to create a content rich website. Whether you are:

* Adding a personal web page
* Building a forum
* Writing a collaborative book
* Retailing goods
* Creating a blog
* Launching a community Website

This book will prove to be an indispensable companion. Both experts and beginners to computing alike will find the information contained herein to be accessible and easy to intuit.

3D Computer Vision: Efficient Methods and Applications

3D Computer Vision: Efficient Methods and Applications, by Christian Wöhler
Springer | 2009 | ISBN 3642017312 | 385 Pages | PDF | 22.13 MB

This book provides an introduction to the foundations of three-dimensional computer vision and describes recent contributions to the field. Geometric methods include linear and bundle adjustment based approaches to scene reconstruction and camera calibration, stereo vision, point cloud segmentation, and pose estimation of rigid, articulated, and flexible objects. Photometric techniques evaluate the intensity distribution in the image to infer three-dimensional scene structure, while real-aperture approaches exploit the behavior of the point spread function. It is shown how the integration of several methods increases reconstruction accuracy and robustness. Applications scenarios include industrial quality inspection, metrology, human-robot-interaction, and remote sensing.

Mastering Oracle Scheduler in Oracle 11g Databases (2009)

Mastering Oracle Scheduler in Oracle 11g Databases
Packt Publishing | 2009-06-20 | ISBN: 1847195989 | 140 pages | PDF | 8.07 MB

Scheduler (DBMS_SCHEDULER) is included in Oracle Database and is a tool for the automation, management, and control of jobs. It enables users to schedule jobs running inside the database such as PL/SQL procedures or PL/SQL blocks, as well as jobs running outside the database like shell scripts. Scheduler ensures that jobs are run on time, automates business processes, and optimizes the use of available resources.

You just need to specify a fixed date and time and Scheduler will do the rest. What if you don’t know the precise time to execute your job? Nothing to worry about, you can specify an event upon which you want your job to be done and Scheduler will execute your job at the appropriate time. Although scheduling sounds quite easy, it requires programming skills and knowledge to set up such a powerful, intelligent scheduler for your project.

This book is your practical guide to DBMS_SCHEDULER for setting up platform-independent schedules that automate the execution of time-based or event-based job processes. It will show you how to automate business processes, and help you manage and monitor those jobs efficiently and effectively. It explains how Scheduler can be used to achieve the tasks you need to make happen in the real world. With a little understanding of how the Scheduler can be used and what kind of control it gives, you will be able to recognize the real power that many known enterprise-class schedulers – with serious price tags – cannot compete with.

You will see how running a specific program can be made dependent on the successful running of certain other programs, and how to separate various tasks using the built-in security mechanisms. You will learn to manage resources to balance the load on your system, and gain increased database performance.

What you will learn from this book ?

Create simple as well as complex jobs and schedule their execution according to your specific needs.

Manage jobs independently of any particular platform so that they can be moved from one system to another easily.

Create chains to link related programs, based on contingent outcomes.
Flag the Scheduler to raise events when unexpected events occur.
Manage logs to find out when jobs ran and analyze the runtime behavior based on recorded execution times.

Combine your resource manager and Scheduler to get maximum throughput for managing thousands of jobs at a time.

Run jobs on machines that do not have a running database using the remote job agent.

Learn to debug jobs and make sure jobs run as expected.

Approach

This is your practical guide to setting up a working environment and using Oracle Scheduler. Packed with simple examples and clear explanations, real-life scenarios are discussed to make you comfortable in implementing them in your own system.

Who this book is written for ?

This book is intended for Administrators and Developers who currently use tools like cron, DBMS_JOB, and the task manager, but who now want more control or who have a need to scale up to tools that can handle the network. Complex tasks can be built that easily control business process and enable the completion of important tasks in limited time.

The reader is expected to have some experience of Oracle Database Management, and a working knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL.

Linux Firewalls: Attack Detection and Response with iptables, psad, and fwsnort
Publisher: No Starch Press | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 1593271417 | 336 pages | PDF | 5.1 Mb

System administrators need to stay ahead of new security vulnerabilities that leave their networks exposed every day. A firewall and an intrusion detection systems (IDS) are two important weapons in that fight, enabling you to proactively deny access and monitor network traffic for signs of an attack.

Linux Firewalls discusses the technical details of the iptables firewall and the Netfilter framework that are built into the Linux kernel, and it explains how they provide strong filtering, Network Address Translation (NAT), state tracking, and application layer inspection capabilities that rival many commercial tools. You’ll learn how to deploy iptables as an IDS with psad and fwsnort and how to build a strong, passive authentication layer around iptables with fwknop.

Concrete examples illustrate concepts such as firewall log analysis and policies, passive network authentication and authorization, exploit packet traces, Snort ruleset emulation, and more with coverage of these topics:

* Passive network authentication and OS fingerprinting
* iptables log analysis and policies
* Application layer attack detection with the iptables string match extension
* Building an iptables ruleset that emulates a Snort ruleset
* Port knocking vs. Single Packet Authorization (SPA)
* Tools for visualizing iptables logs

Perl and C code snippets offer practical examples that will help you to maximize your deployment of Linux firewalls. If you’re responsible for keeping a network secure, you’ll find Linux Firewalls invaluable in your attempt to understand attacks and use iptables—along with psad and fwsnort—to detect and even prevent compromises.

Seam 2.x Web Development

Seam 2.x Web Development
Publisher: Packt Publishing | Edition: 2009 | ISBN: 184719592X | PDF | 300 pages | 6.94 MB

Product Description

Build robust web applications with Seam, Facelets, and RichFaces using the JBoss application server

* Develop rich web applications using Seam 2.x, Facelets, and RichFaces and deploy them on the JBoss Application Server
* Integrate standard technologies like JSF, Facelets, EJB, and JPA with Seam and build on them using additional Seam components
* Informative and practical approach to development with fully working examples and source code for each chapter of the book

In Detail

The Seam framework from JBoss allows developers to use JSF, Facelets, EJB, and JPA to write conversational web applications. But you will first have to learn how these standard technologies are integrated using Seam and how they can be built upon using additional Seam components. If you need to build a Java web application fast, but don’t have time to learn all these complex features, then this book is for you.

The book provides a practical approach to developing Seam applications highlighting good development practices. It provides a complete walk through to develop Web applications using Seam, Facelets, and RichFaces and explains how to deploy them to the JBoss Application Server. You can start using key aspects of the Seam framework immediately because this book builds on them chapter by chapter, finally ending with details of enterprise functionality such as PDF report generation and event frameworks.

First, the book introduces you to the fundamentals of Seam applications, describing topics such as Injection, Outjection and Bijection. You will understand the Facelets framework, AJAX, database persistence, and advanced Seam concepts through the many examples in the book.

The book takes a practical approach throughout to describing the technologies and tools involved. You will add functionality to Seam applications after you learn how to use the Seam Generator RAD tools and how to customize and fully test application functionality. Hints and tips are provided along the way of how to use Seam and the JBoss Application Server.

What you will learn from this book?

* Understand the fundamentals of Seam and why Seam is different from many other web frameworks
* Develop web applications using the Facelets viewing technology as an advanced replacement for JSF
* Test all aspects of a Seam application including testing web pages and Seam components
* Utilize the RichFaces library for developing advanced, rich user interfaces including AJAX technologies for an improved user experience
* Develop persistent applications using the Java Persistence API (JPA)
* Build conversational web applications that can run over multiple browser windows and tabs without worrying about storing session data
* Secure applications using role-based security, CAPTCHA, and OpenId
* Easily use Facelets to render data as HTML/PDF/RTF/email
* Use JBoss Tools to rapidly enhance your developer productivity

Approach

Having developed enterprise Java applications since 2001, the author’s experience enables him to provide a clear incremental approach to web development with Seam. Initially the book introduces Seam using Java Server Pages (JSP) as the view technology so that readers can quickly learn the key concepts behind Seam. Additional technologies used within Seam applications are then introduced chapter by chapter with each chapter building on the material previously learned. The book describes each technology, providing working examples and source code for each.

This is not a dry Seam reference book, but an exciting journey learning Seam, starting at the basics and progressing by the end of the book to more advanced enterprise features.

Who this book is written for?

This book is for Java EE application developers who are new to Seam and interested in developing with Seam 2.x.

You will need a basic understanding of Java EE and also to be aware of EJB3, although you do not need to know it in any detail. Experience with JBoss AS would be great, but all you really need is to be comfortable using any application server. Knowledge of AJAX and JavaScript would also be beneficial, although it is not necessary.

Product Description
Why is Accelerated C++ so effective? Because it

*Starts with the most useful concepts rather than the most primitive ones: You can begin writing programs immediately.
*Describes real problems and solutions, not just language features: You see not only what each feature is, but also how to use it.
*Covers the language and standard library together: You can use the library right from the start.

The authors proved this approach in their professional-education course at Stanford University, where students learned how to write substantial programs on their first day in the classroom.

From the Back Cover

This is a first-rate introductory book that takes a practical approach to solving problems using C++. It covers a much wider scope of C++ programming than other introductory books I’ve seen, and in a surprisingly compact format.
–Dag Brück, founding member of the ANSI/ISO C++ committee

The authors present a clear, cogent introduction to C++ programming in a way that gets the student writing nontrivial programs immediately.
–Stephen Clamage, Sun Microsystems, Inc., and chair of the ANSI C++ committee

Anyone reading just this one book and working through the examples and exercises will have the same skills as many professional programmers.
–Jeffrey D. Oldham, Stanford University

Programming Windows Workflow Foundation: Practical WF Techniques and Examples Using XAML and C#

* Paperback: 300 pages
* Publisher: Packt Publishing Limited (22 Dec 2006)
* Language English
* ISBN-10: 1904811213
* ISBN-13: 978-1904811213
* Product Dimensions: 22.9 x 17.8 x 1.3 cm

Synopsis
A fast-paced and practical developer’s road map to working with Windows WF, from compilation to the base activity library to runtime services. Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) is a technology for defining, executing, and managing workflows. It is part of the .NET Framework 3.0 and will be available natively in the Windows Vista operating system. Windows Workflow Foundation might be the most significant piece of middleware to arrive on the Windows platform since COM+ and the Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The difference is, not every application needs a distributed transaction, but nearly every application does have a workflow encoded inside it. In this book, K Scott Allen, author of renowned .NET articles at www.odetocode.com, provides you with all the information needed to develop successful products with Windows Workflow. From the basics of how Windows Workflow can solve the difficult problems inherent in workflow solutions, through authoring workflows in code, learning about the base activity library in Windows Workflow and the different types of workflow provided, and on to building event-driven workflows using state machines, workflow communications, and finally rules and conditions in Windows Workflow, this book will give you the in-depth information you need. Throughout the book, an example “bug reporting” workflow system is developed, showcasing the technology and techniques used. Fast-paced and to-the-point, this book takes you through the important topics of Windows WF development with clear explanations and practical example code. The book’s selection of topics is driven by what the working developer needs to know. It is neither a comprehensive reference to the whole WF architecture, nor a strategy guide to the complete application development lifecycle. It’s just what you as a C# developer need to know to use WF in your applications. This book is for .NET developers who want to enhance their applications with flexible workflow capabilities using Microsoft Windows Workflow Foundation. The author assumes that you have read other texts on the overall architecture of WF and on WF application design strategies, and instead focuses on real-work implementation issues for C# developers.

Product Description
If you don’t hack your systems, who will?

One of the reasons I put this book project together is that I believe security professionals should be hackers. In this case, by hackers, I mean people who are capable of defeating security measures. This book purports to teach people how to be hackers. In reality, most of the people who buy this book will do so because they want to protect their own systems and those of their employer. So, how can you prevent break-ins to your system if you don’t know how they are accomplished? How do you test your security measures? How do you make a judgment about how secure a new system is?

When you’re through reading Hack Proofing Your Network, you’ll understand terms like “smashing the stack,” “blind spoofing,” “building a backward bridge,” “steganography,” “buffer overflow” and you’ll see why you need to worry about them. You will learn how to protect your servers from attacks by using a 5-step approach:

1. Planning

2. Network/Machine Recon

3. Research/Develop

4. Execute Attack and Achieve Goal

5. Cleanup

And you’ll understand the theory of hacking, how to fend off local and remote attacks, and how to report and evaluate security problems.

The Only Way to Stop a Hacker Is to Think Like One.

Product Description

Much of the publicity around .NET has focused on using .NET to build Webbased applications. Many developers, however, are using .NET to build traditional Windows-based applications. Microsoft has provided a package called Windows Forms, or WinForms, which makes the development of these apps easier and faster than ever. Chris Sells has written the definitive book to help experienced Microsoft developers master the use of this powerful toolkit.

Based on the experience he has gained developing with and teaching WinForms for the last two years, he goes beyond other books currently on the market. Chris has a critically acclaimed writing style that allows him to keep the material concise and easy to follow. He concentrates on what you won’t find in the documentation, giving developers the information they really need.

Reviewers are already calling this “the best WinForms book around”, “the definitive book for every Windows Programmer”, and “without a doubt the best and most useful C#/WinFOrms book I have ever read.” We will be publishing a Visual Basic .NET version later this year.
